Recap - Launch Event for Jim Zub and Steve Cummings’ WAYWARD put on by The Beguiling
This is a week later than I expected to write it, but last Wednesday, kimreadsblogs and I went to The Beguiling’s launch event for Jim Zub (jimzub) and Steve Cummings’ WAYWARD #1. Hosted at Guu, an Iyazaka(Japanese tapas) bar, Zub was joined by variant cover artists Chip Zdarsky (zdarsky), Kalman Andrasofszky (iamkalman) and Adam Warren (adamwarrencomics) to sign a variety of variant covers that were available for the first issue.
I’m not generally one for variant covers, but we really liked the designs so we actually ended up getting three:
From left to right, those are cover E (Kalman Andrasofszky), cover J (Steve Cummings) and cover I (Chip Zdarsky).
We had a great time both because of the location which we already love (excellent food, gigantic beers), as well as the event itself. We ended up sitting across from an aspiring illustrator (dylan-magwood) and his girlfriend and ended up talking comics with them for hours - everything from the most mainstream of mainstream comics to obscure independent comics. It was a lot of fun and I ended up with a few more books on my list to look out for when I’m shopping around.
As I mentioned, there was a signing but for the most part, it was a more festive environment with people talking, eating and drinking. The only formal (and I use that word loosely, see the picture below) part of the event was Zub giving a speech thanking everyone involved as well as his family. He got a bit choked up and when finished we all got back to the business of having fun and talking comics.
Another great event put on by The Beguiling. Even better, the comic itself, WAYWARD #1 was great and I’m looking forward to the series continuing.
